Single Terminal POS — best for kiosks & small cafes

Single Terminal POS architecture connected to ChefDesk cloud

One device. Low investment. Live in a day.

A single POS device runs billing, KOT printing and cloud sync — no network, no server, nothing to maintain. Perfect for a cafe, small QSR, sweet shop or take-away counter.

What you need
Android all-in-one POS or a Windows touch POS, one thermal printer, optional card reader (Ezetap / Mosambee / Pinelabs).
Order taking
Counter POS. Add a handheld device for kerb-side or line-busting.
KOT flow
Print KOT to a thermal printer at the pass, or route to a KDS if the kitchen has a screen.
Best for
Cafes, kiosks, sweet shops, bakeries and small take-away QSRs.
  • All-in-one Android POS with built-in printer & card reader
  • Runs on any Windows laptop, desktop or Essae / Posiflex touch POS
  • Works offline — bills queue locally and sync to cloud on reconnect
  • Handheld POS with GPRS SIM available for very small kiosks

Multi Touch POS Terminals — best for QSR chains

Multi Touch POS Terminals synced to cloud without a local server

Multiple counters. No local server. No queues.

Every POS terminal is independent and syncs directly to the cloud. Kill long billing queues at peak hours, add a counter in minutes, and never lose a sale to a server crash — because there is no server.

What you need
2+ POS terminals, KOT printer or KDS in the kitchen, WiFi/LAN router for internet.
Order taking
Multiple counter POS. Add QR Scan & Order or a self-order kiosk to remove pressure at the till.
KOT flow
KOT printer for a single kitchen, KDS if you have prep, grill and beverage stations.
Best for
Pizza, burger, chaat, tea outlets — anywhere billing speed is the bottleneck.
  • Zero investment in server hardware or OS licenses
  • No single point of failure — one POS down, others keep billing
  • Data lands in the cloud in real time for consolidated reporting
  • Add Scan & Order and Kiosk to divert traffic from the counter

Smart Phone / Tablet POS — best for cloud kitchens & small dine-ins

Smart phone and tablet POS terminals synced over WiFi

Skip the LAN cables. Run everything on phones and tablets.

ChefDesk's Android app turns any phone or tablet into a POS. No cabling, no local server — just WiFi (or a GPRS SIM). Great for cloud kitchens, dark stores, food trucks and small dine-ins where running LAN is impractical.

What you need
Android phones or tablets, WiFi access points, optional cloud printer or KDS in the kitchen.
Order taking
Tablet at the pass, captains with phones, aggregator orders (Swiggy / Zomato) pulled in automatically.
KOT flow
KDS on a wall-mounted screen, or ChefDesk KOT app on a spare tablet in the kitchen.
Best for
Cloud kitchens, dark stores, food trucks, pop-ups, tiny dine-ins.
  • WiFi access points cover the entire floor — add captains anytime
  • GPRS/SIM fallback for locations without stable WiFi
  • Real-time cloud sync across every phone, tablet and printer
  • Lowest capex — no server, no LAN cabling, no dedicated POS hardware

LAN Multi-Terminal + local server — best for large restaurants

LAN connected multi-terminal setup with a local server

Fort-knox reliability for high-volume operations.

A hardened LAN with a local server keeps every POS, KOT printer, KDS and captain device in sync — even if the internet drops. Purpose-built for banquets, multi-floor casual dining and any operation where downtime is not an option.

What you need
Local server, structured LAN, multiple POS + KOT printers / KDS, UPS backup.
Order taking
Cashier POS at each floor / section, captain OTMs on WiFi.
KOT flow
Multi-station KDS with routing rules + section-wise KOT printers as backup.
Best for
Banquets, multi-floor casual/fine-dine, luxury hotels' F&B.
  • Enterprise-grade POS hardware (solid-state, passive cooling) built to last
  • Central firewall & anti-virus — maximum data security
  • Local server + cloud: operations never stop, reports always fresh
  • Integrates KOT printers, KDS, EDC machines and delivery aggregators

LAN + WiFi (POS + Captain OTM) — best for fine dine & casual dine

LAN + WiFi setup with cashier POS and captain mobile OTM devices

Cashier POS at the counter. Captains at the table.

A local server hosts data for every cashier POS, KDS and KOT printer over LAN, while captains take orders at the table on ChefDesk OTM app over WiFi. Faster service, fewer errors and better table-turn times.

What you need
Local server, LAN + WiFi, 1+ cashier POS, captain phones / tablets, KDS or KOT printers per section.
Order taking
Captain OTM at the table + cashier POS for billing & payments.
KOT flow
KDS in main kitchen + KOT printers at bar, tandoor, dessert sections.
Best for
Fine dine, casual dine, bar & pubs, resort restaurants.
  • Captain OTM cuts order-to-kitchen time from minutes to seconds
  • Operations continue even if internet drops — server is on LAN
  • Unlimited terminals: POS, printers, KDS, EDC, aggregator gateways
  • Cloud sync keeps owner dashboards and multi-outlet reports live

Order-taking methods — pick one or combine them

Every ChefDesk setup supports every ordering method. Mix and match to serve customers the way they want to be served.

Counter POS

Traditional cashier terminal — fastest for high-volume QSR and take-away.

Captain OTM (mobile)

Waiters take orders at the table on a phone or tablet. Cuts errors and boosts table-turn time.

Self-order Kiosk

Guests order themselves at a touch screen — great for QSR, food courts and cinemas.

QR Scan & Order

Diners scan a QR at the table, browse the menu and order without downloading an app.

WhatsApp ordering

Take orders on the world's most used chat app. Confirmations and updates go back on WhatsApp.

KOT printer vs Kitchen Display System (KDS)

The kitchen is where speed is made or lost. Here's how paper KOTs compare with a digital KDS — so you can pick what your kitchen actually needs.

Connectivity & reliability

Cloud sync

Every sale, KOT and payment lands in the ChefDesk cloud in near real-time. Multi-outlet dashboards, reports and menu changes push down instantly.

Offline mode

Internet down? Billing continues locally on POS terminals or via the local server. Data syncs automatically when the connection returns.

LAN vs WiFi

LAN for large, uptime-critical setups. WiFi + tablets for lightweight cloud kitchens and small dine-ins. LAN + WiFi combines both for premium formats.

Frequently asked questions

Start with a Single Terminal POS. One Android all-in-one device or a Windows touch POS with a thermal printer is enough. It keeps hardware investment low, installs in a day and syncs sales to the cloud automatically for reports on your phone.

Not always. Multi Touch POS Terminals work independently and sync to the cloud without any local server. A local server (LAN Multi-Terminal setup) becomes worthwhile only for very large restaurants where you need guaranteed uptime even during internet outages and want to connect many KOT printers, KDS screens and captain devices reliably.

Choose printer KOTs if your kitchen is small (1–2 stations) and staff prefer paper tickets. Choose a Kitchen Display System (KDS) if you run a multi-section kitchen, a cloud kitchen or a fine-dine format where you need order timing, modifier highlighting and prep-time analytics. Many outlets combine both — KDS on the main line, printer at the pass.

Yes. ChefDesk's Windows POS runs on standard laptops, desktops and leading touch POS terminals (Essae, Posiflex etc.). It's a great way to trial the system before investing in dedicated POS hardware.

Billing continues offline on every setup. On the Single Terminal, Multi Touch and Tablet setups, orders queue locally and sync to the cloud the moment connectivity returns. In LAN setups, the local server keeps every terminal talking to each other — internet is only needed for cloud reporting.

Yes — the LAN + WiFi setup is designed exactly for this. Cashiers work on POS terminals for billing and payments, while waiters take orders at the table on ChefDesk OTM (Order Taking Machine) app. Every order lands on the KDS or KOT printer instantly.

Every setup — Single Terminal, Multi Touch, Tablet or LAN — pushes data to the same cloud. From the ChefDesk dashboard you get consolidated sales, item, tax and cost reports across all outlets, with drill-down per location. Menu, price and tax changes push down to outlets from the same dashboard.

Book a demo and our team will map your existing menu, taxes, printers and integrations. Most outlets go live in 3–7 days. We support running old and new POS in parallel for a couple of days so you never lose a transaction during the switch.
